Why Choose Sports Medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital
Our fellowship program is designed to bring you up to speed smoothly, while learning from the best minds in the field.
A Well-Rounded Curriculum with Individualized Experiences
Our sports medicine fellows complete four, three-month rotations to provide continuity and diversity in training. You will care for patients in up to 10 practice locations, all equipped with in-office ultrasound, radiology and physical therapy. You will also attend weekly lectures, a journal club and case conferences.
Your personal interests will dictate the direction of your program. You will be given elective time and flexibility to tailor rotations to develop skills in a particular area, such as orthopedics, fracture management and academic medicine. Our fellows also are expected to complete a quality improvement project of their choosing.
A considerable amount of your training will include hands-on care, as a team physician for local high schools, D3 and D1 colleges, professional sports teams and national and Olympic athletes. You will also cover sporting events, like IRONMAN Ohio, Emerald City Half Marathon, Columbus Marathon and national triathlons.
How We Will Support You
Our strong curriculum and unmatched experiences will be sure to set you up for success. But that’s not all. You will be supported by talented faculty and have resources available to you that can only be found at an organization like OhioHealth.
- Rotations

Your rotations will include experiences in:
- Sports medicine
- Sports, hand, foot and ankle orthopedics
- Athletic team management, including preparticipation screenings
- Musculoskeletal radiology
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Stress and exercise testing
- Injection, aspiration, casting, splinting, taping, compartment pressure management and reduction of joint dislocations
You will also gain academic achievements through presentations at local and national conferences and workshops, publication opportunities, individual mentoring and directed readings.
At the completion of your program, you should be able to evaluate, diagnose and manage common sports and exercise conditions and injuries in a variety of practice locations, including special considerations for age, gender and disability.
- Faculty and Education
-
One of the things that sets our Sports Medicine Fellowship apart from others is access to quality faculty. As a fellow, you will learn from one of the largest groups of Certificate of Added Qualification faculty in the nation. Our faculty includes OhioHealth physicians in sports medicine and other specialties, community-based orthopedic surgeons, nutrition specialists and sports psychologists.
If you have an interest in medical education as well, you will be given ample opportunities to teach residents and interact with students, give lectures and participate in the Faculty Development Series at Riverside Methodist.
- Culture
-
Our culture at OhioHealth is one of our greatest strengths. We operate as a family, and you will find a high level of camaraderie among OhioHealth fellows and faculty physicians. Many of our faculty volunteer their time because they are passionate about physician education. They want to see you succeed and get the most out of your training.
- Wellness
-
We believe that wellness and resilience are imperative in being an effective physician. Riverside Methodist is a national leader in the provider wellness field. We regularly use the Mayo Clinic’s Well-Being Index to identify and address burnout and distress, provide a format for reflective groups, and offer proactive meetings with our Physician Health and Wellness group to help you manage stress.
- Research and Development
-
Our sports medicine fellows are given half a day each week to pursue academic projects of interest. Any research you choose to explore will be supported by dedicated faculty and the OhioHealth Research Institute. You will have access to existing research, clinical and data coordination, contract guidance and quality assurance.
An expansive simulation environment will also be available to you through the Center for Medical Education + Innovation. This advanced technology allows for hands-on learning through patient simulators in a Virtual Care Unit and clinical skills laboratories.
- Outcomes and Placement

Our graduates can be found practicing sports medicine across the United States, with many choosing to remain in Ohio. Many stay with OhioHealth for their long-term career, having gained an appreciation for our culture and development opportunities.
