WHAT IS A SWING BED?

Patients “swing” from hospital care to rehabilitation and skilled nursing care without leaving the hospital. This allows them to receive additional short-term rehabilitation care beyond their hospital stay until they are well enough to return home.

If a patient has been hospitalized in a facility away from home and needs additional skilled care, a swing bed program allows them to transfer to their community-based hospital to complete their recovery.
