Overview of UpBEAT Programs
We offer a variety of activities throughout the week that meet the needs of all of our members, including:
- Exercise Class
-
This is an enjoyable start to the day! This Gentle on the Joints class incorporates flexibility, strength, and endurance to maintain activities of daily living. We provide chair-based and standing exercises, with a focus on achieving full range of motion. Therabands® are used for resistance training and cardiovascular exercises focus on endurance. Multi-tasking is used to keep the brain alert and balance exercises round out the format.
UpBEAT Exercise is in collaboration with the United Seniors of Athens County (USAC). A one-time waiver will need to be signed prior to beginning the class.
It is hosted on Tuesdays from 10-11AM and is located at USAC at the Athens Community Center, 701 E State Street, Athens, OH.
- Chair Volleyball
-
Join us for fun and friendship with the chair volleyball program! This is great for upper body mobility and joint flexibility and is an entertaining way to stay active. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water.
Please sign a one-time waiver with UpBEAT prior to joining the class. If you have questions, please contact Megan at megan.handle@ohiohealth.com
It is hosted on Thursdays at 9AM at The Market on State, 1002 E State Street, Athens. Check the calendar of events, as dates will vary each month.
- History Group
-
Each month UpBEAT dives into a history program with an emphasis on Ohio. You won’t want to miss these educational, informational, and interesting presentations. In warmer weather we explore the great outdoors. The presenters represent groups and organizations from all over the state of Ohio and include topics ranging from the total eclipse of the sun to the Moonville Tunnel to Lord Dunmore’s War and so much more. Come and explore the world of history with us.
- Nutrition as We Age
-
This program was created from the voice of our members expressing a special interest in nutrition for healthy aging. The program uses evidence-based practices and guidance in learning about specific nutrition topics. The pillars of the program include a monthly newsletter article, dietitian tip, seasonal recipe, and an educational session with hands-on demonstration and food sampling.
- Field Trips
-
Ranging from historical to community to outdoor spaces, UpBEAT field trips give us a space to explore the areas around us. Examples of past trips include the Mahn Center, the Kennedy Museum of Art, and fun hikes.
- Additional Presentations
-
UpBEAT offers additional presentations, outings, and workshops each month on a variety of topics. These are member driven (and often member hosted) and there is something for everyone! Please refer to the monthly newsletter for up-to-date activities.
- Health, Wellness, and Exercise Video Library
-
This is an on-demand Vimeo showcase library, specifically designed for the UpBEAT members who prefer a virtual option to exercise. It includes exercise classes taught by exercise physiologists and additional health and wellness options.
If you are interested in continuing to exercise virtually or if you would like more information, please reach out to Mary Jane at (740) 566-4680. It is a user-friendly model and easy to participate, just one click and you are in!
- Tai Chi
-
Tai chi is a gentle, low-impact form of exercise in which practitioners perform a series of deliberate, flowing motions while focusing on deep, slow breaths. This is an excellent exercise program to assist with balance.
It is held every Thursday at 11:30 AM at the exercise studio at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State Street, Athens, OH.
- Discovery Kitchen Workshops
-
This is a grant funded program that focuses on simple, fresh, and nutritious meal planning and preparation. The program provides education and a hands-on approach to prepare meals for a family of one or two. Participants receive recipes and produce to take home as a successful way to continue with their wellness journey.
- Food for thought
-
The Food for Thought program provides educational workshops and presentations from professionals from OhioHealth and other organizations. Each month we explore a new topic on a wide variety of subjects including new science and research, geology, gardening, protecting nature, and more.
- Lunch Bunch
-
Come and join the Lunch Bunch and delight in a delicious lunch and lively conversation. Each month will be at a different location as you get a taste of Athens. For questions, please contact UpBEAT member Rhonda Koch at srkoch@peoplepc.com
- Celebrations
-
UpBEAT has spring and fall annual celebrations. We love getting all of our members together for friendship, fellowship, and fun!
