Overview of UpBEAT Programs
We offer a variety of activities throughout the week that meet the needs of all of our members, including:
- UpBEAT Exercise

This is a weekly Gentle on the Joints class, that incorporates stretching, balance, cardiovascular and resistance training. The class is chair based with standing exercises for balance and strength. This class is well suited for those who enjoy a low-impact and low to moderate level class.
- Tai Chi

The focus of a Tai Chi class is for balance and fall prevention. A series of slow movements to improve health and mind-body awareness through mindfulness, breathing, strengthening, balance and stretching postures. Research suggests that practicing Tai Chi may have a variety of health benefits including improved balance, improved mood/quality of life, improved activity tolerance, enhanced immune system, increased flexibility, strength, body awareness and enhances pain and stress management.
UpBEAT Tai Chi, is in collaboration with the United Seniors of Athens Count, (USAC.) In person only on Thursday’s 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at no cost. The location is the exercise studio at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State Street, Athens. Instructor is Ed Lewis. Please sign a one-time waiver with USAC, prior to beginning the class.

UpBEAT Food for Thought Program provides free health education workshops and presentations. Each month we explore a new topic on a wide variety of subjects including, nutrition, new science and research, geology, gardening, protecting nature and more.

UpBEAT offers additional presentations, outings and workshops each month on a variety of topics. Please refer to the monthly newsletter for up-to-date activities that are planned. Bring a friend and introduce them to our UpBEAT family. There is sure to be something for everyone - Music Therapy, Cooking Demonstrations, Neuro-Choir, Member Presentations, Nutrition as We Age, and so much more.

UpBEAT was founded in 1996 by Peggy Irwin and continues to thrive today serving the older adult population in Athens County and beyond. This program is part of the Community Health Partnerships with OhioHealth and funded by O'Bleness Hospital. Every October, UpBEAT Celebrates the program and the members with a special event. It's a wonderful time to connect with old friends and meet new acquaintances.

UpBEAT hosts a summer picnic each year at the local Lions Club Park and event center. Enjoy lunch and activities with UpBEAT friends, while also having the opportunity to introduce your friends to join our UpBEAT family.
