Bohdan W. Chopko, MD, PhD is an Ohio native who has joined the OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital as a board-certified neurosurgeon. He is committed to spearheading and expanding all adult neurosurgical services for Richland County area and surrounding communities. His areas of particular clinical interest include minimally invasive spine surgery, complex spinal reconstruction, skull base neurosurgery, cerebrovascular diseases, and neurointerventional surgery.
Dr. Chopko is proud to be a product of public education and began his education at Kent State University. He subsequently attended the Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), where he was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine degree. During that time, he also earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in neurobiology in the joint neurosciences program at NEOMED and Kent State University. He next traveled to the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, where he completed an internship in general surgery and residency in neurological surgery. While there, he also completed a fellowship in interventional neuroradiology, a rapidly evolving subspecialty that is now named neurointerventional surgery. Neurointerventional surgery is a field dedicated to treatment of neurologic diseases by navigating catheters and needles to access nerves, brain and spinal cord using sophisticated image guidance techniques. Dr. Chopko practiced neurosurgery in Mansfield, Ohio from 2000-2013 and was board certified in 2005. In 2013, he joined the Department of Neurosurgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine as an associate professor, where he practiced in the greater Las Vegas area.
For over two decades, Dr. Chopko has been involved in clinical research dedicated to improving the lives of patient suffering from a wide variety of neurologic and spinal conditions. He is a well-known lecturer and teacher amongst his peers and has been on the faculty of NEOMED since 1992. He is also involved in the development of biomedical devices and has been awarded multiple patents within this field.
During his free time away from medicine and science, Dr. Chopko first and foremost enjoys spending time with his family. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Chopko enjoys activities as diverse as long-distance running, adventure motorcycling and plein air painting.
