Daniel E. Smith, MD is a board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in Neuroinfectious Disease, Autoimmune Neurology, as well as Multiple Sclerosis. He is trained to see challenging cases with unclear diagnosis upfront, and will systematically work on diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Smith treats each of his patients and their cases individually. He will establish long term care with his patients but is also available to see patients with questions regarding infectious, inflammatory, or autoimmune neurological disorders in isolated consultation. Dr. Smith’s background and education brings a unique skill set to OhioHealth as one of our general neurologists.
Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate degree from the Ohio State University before graduating with his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he also completed residency. His fellowship was spent at the University of Colorado which included additional rotation time at the CDC’s Division of Vector Borne Diseases in Ft. Collins, CO.
Dr. Smith believes a relationship with a patient is often life-long and he takes enjoyment in working with them to improve their lives the best he can. He is excited about the continued growth of knowledge in the areas of autoimmune and inflammatory neurology, especially since many of these disorders are treatable. It can be helpful to understand infectious neurology as well, given our growing collection of immunosuppressive therapies. Treatments for multiple sclerosis and autoimmune disorders are rapidly expanding, and there is renewed hope for many patients with these types of diseases. He hopes to bring to OhioHealth an approach for all of these different types of patients.
When not spending time with his patients, Dr. Smith enjoys playing golf and tennis. With music being a big part of his life for many years, he continues to play violin and piano. He also enjoys coin and baseball memorabilia collecting and is an avid Cleveland Indians baseball fan. He and his wife enjoy spending time with family in the area and enjoy traveling when they can.
