Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina, and then attended East Carolina University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree and served as class president for three years.
He completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. And then pursued his fellowship training in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and critical care medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he was chosen as Chief Fellow.
Dr. Smith holds four board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine: internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and critical care medicine. He also holds an Endovascular board certification by the American Board of Vascular Medicine, and a Critical Care Echocardiography board certification by the American Society of Echocardiography.
His clinical expertise includes complex and CTO PCI, acute coronary syndromes, cardiovascular emergencies, shock, mechanical circulatory support, cardiovascular critical care, advanced heart failure therapies, pulmonary embolism, and acute limb ischemia.
In addition to his role in interventional cardiology, Dr. Smith is the Director of the Cardiac ICU at Riverside Methodist Hospital. In his role, he aims to advance the care of critically ill cardiac patients at OhioHealth and within the Columbus region.
Dr. Smith has authored or coauthored more than 100 manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters. He has served as the principal investigator in more than 20 clinical trials and been an involved in more than 50 trials. He was elected and served two terms on the Ohio ACC Board of Trustees. He is a sought-after speaker and clinician at the regional, national, and international levels as well as previously being selected as a Top Doc in Cincinnati.
